The Mitcham Football Club along with our Past Players & Officials Association are extremely saddened to convey the passing of one of our former Captain Coaches from 1963 & 1964, Ron Johnson on the 15th February, age 84.
Ron was a Richmond person through and through who was an an uncompromising rover for the Richmond FC .
He left the Richmond FC in 1963 to take on his appointment as Captain Coach of the Mitcham Football Club, still remaining a Tiger.
Whilst kicking 9 goals in his first match for Mitcham, the club were nonetheless very surprised when it found out he also played some Sunday football for the Richmond Districts FC.
This was not uncommon as some Leagues were unaffiliated at this time allowing players to cross over without a clearence. In the end it mattered little as he was such a gun Rover as evidenced by his selection in the Mitcham Football Club’s – Team of the Century, an honour Ron always held close to his heart.
Our deepest condolences are extended to Ron’s wife Beverley and children Diane, Kyle and Rhett.
